Zubeen Garg and ‘Roi Roi Binale’: The music world woke up heartbroken after the sudden passing of legendary Assamese singer-composer Zubeen Garg. The 52-year-old star is loved across India for his soulful voice and fearless personality. He died in Singapore on September 19. The singer reportedly suffered a seizure while swimming.
But Assam has chosen not to let his final note fade quietly. In a rare and emotional tribute, every cinema hall in the state will stop screening all movies from October 31. No new films, no ongoing releases, only ‘Roi Roi Binale’, personal dream project of Zubeen Garg, will play on big screens. This is the state’s way of honouring a man whose voice became a part of Assam’s identity.

Well-known Assamese filmmaker Rajesh Bhuyan revealed earlier this month that the film will serve as a posthumous tribute.
According to industry reports, movies like ‘Thamma’, ‘Ek Deewane Ki Deewaniyat’, ‘Kantara: A Legend Chapter-1’, ‘Jolly LLB 3’, ‘The Taj Story’, and even new global releases will not be shown in Assam during this period.
This kind of gesture is almost not heard of in Indian cinema. But for Assam, this is personal. Zubeen wasn’t just a singer but a cultural wave, a voice that carried the pride, pain, and dreams of the North-East to every corner of the country.
Political leaders too have joined hands to pay respect. Assam Congress leader Gaurav Gogoi has formally requested Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma to make the film tax-free. In his letter, Gogoi wrote that the late singer’s sudden death has created a deep emotional void among the people, and a tax exemption would be a fitting honour for his contributions to Assam’s art and culture.
Filmmaker Rajesh Bhuyan also shared that ‘Roi Roi Binale’ will feature original voice recordings of Zubeen Garg. This detail brings comfort to fans who still choose to feel his presence through his songs.
Zubeen Garg’s career spanned decades. He gave numerous songs that people dance to.
