SS Rajamouli’s magnum opus, which destroyed all box office records in 2017, has failed to impress the Chinese audiances.

Despite its rigorous promotions, the film has failed to draw Chinese people to the cinema halls, may be because people are accustomed to watching films like Baahubali.

What’s the buzz?

After its historic run in 2017, Baahubali 2 emerged as the second highest grossing Indian film after Dangal and it was expected to surpass Dangal‘s lifetime collection when the film made its way to the Chinese box office. Unfortunately that didn’t happen.

After the enormous success of films like Dangal, Bajrangi Bhaijaan, Secret Superstar and Hindi Medium, Baahubali 2 was expected to shatter all records at the box office in the neighbouring country. And actually it did on its opening day.

Baahubali: The Conclusion fared better than films like Dangal and Bajrangi Bhaijaan on the first day of its release. However, it failed to maintain the momentum and dropped miserably at the box office.

After 11 days of its release in China, Baahubali 2 has only grossed $ 11.16 mn (Rs 75.17 crore) with a noticeable drop in the collections after the opening weekend.

Baahubali 2, which debuted at number three at the box office, witnessed a downward trend over the first week and failed to create the magic it once created during its original run.

On the unexpected downfall of the film, Chinese business tracker Gavin Feng told Firstpost, “I’m not sure how local distributor Huaying Tianxia see this result. The opening Baahubali 2 received was beyond expectations from local insiders and trackers. The recent string of successes for Indian films is also one of the reasons for the good opening. Dangal, Secret Superstar, Bajrangi Bhaijaan and Hindi Medium are drama-comedy type films. Baahubali 2 is a fantasy-action, a genre Chinese audiences are very much accustomed to.”

Baahubali 2‘s China collections has pushed the film’s cumulative overseas takings to $61.26 mn and its lifetime collections (worldwide) to Rs 1788.72 crore.

Directed by SS Rajamouli, Baahubali 2, starring Prabhas and Rana Daggubati in the lead roles was released in China on May 4.
