Rahul Gandhi reached Kozhikode late on Wednesday night to file his nomination. He was welcomed by party workers and supporters holding Congress and ally Indian Union Muslim League flags when he arrived at the Kozhikode international airport on Wednesday night.

The Wayanad parliamentary constituency has seven assembly segments, three each in Wayanad and Malappuram districts and one in Kozhikode district.

Senior Congress leaders including Wasnik, KC Venugopal, Mullappally Ramachandran and Indian Union Muslim League leader K Kunhalikutty were in Kozhikode on Wednesday to make arrangements for the event. Tight security is in place in both Kozhikode and Wayanad districts in view of the high-profile visits.

Wayanad will witness a triangular contest between Congress’ Rahul Gandhi, CPI’s PP Suneer and BJP’s Thushar Vellappally.

Congress had won eight Lok Sabha seats in Kerala in the 2014 Lok Sabha elections, besides two by its ally Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) and one by Kerala Congress (Mani) and one by Revolutionary Socialist Party (RSP).

The party is hoping to further consolidate its position this time in the state.

Wayanad district is in the northeastern part of Kerala and houses various tribal groups of the state. The area was badly affected due to last year’s floods.

Kerala which has 20 Lok Sabha seats will go to polls during the 3rd phase of elections on April 23.

The counting of votes will be held on May 23 and the results will be declared on the same day.
