The University Grants Commission (UGC), on Tuesday asked the universities to devise a mechanism through statutory bodies to permit students to pursue 2 academic programmes simultaneously.
As per the existing UGC guidelines, the students are able to pursue 2 full-time academic programmes simultaneously in the physical mode. However, the class timings for one programme should not overlap with the other.
As per the higher education regulatory body, the student can pursue 2 academic programmes, one in full-time physical mode and another in open and distance Learning or online programmes simultaneously.
However, UGC notification issued on January 10, underlines that it has come to the notice that the students are facing lots of difficulties as higher education institutions insist on migration certificates and school leaving certificates to admit students to dual degree programmes.
In the absence of these certificates, UGC added, the students do not hold the freedom to take admission and that destroys the whole facility of pursuing two academic programmes simultaneously.
The commission earlier asked the universities to make statutory changes for dual-degree programme in September 2022.
