Even 75 years after independence, India has not fully broken free from the education system introduced by Lord Macaulay during British rule, a system often criticised for creating clerks rather than thinkers. Now, a major step has been taken to change that.
The Bhartiya Shiksha Board (BSB), based in Haridwar, has announced full implementation of National Curriculum Framework for School Education 2023 (NCF 2023) and National Curriculum Framework for Foundational Stage 2022 (NCF-FS 2022) starting from academic session 2026-27. This makes BSB first school board in the country to implement NCF across all stages of school education.

The new curriculum will cover every stage of schooling from Balvatika (pre-primary level) to secondary classes. The framework will be applied uniformly across all schools affiliated with the Bhartiya Shiksha Board.
This is being seen as decisive shift away from rote learning. Instead, schools will now follow competency-based, experiential, holistic teaching methods. Students will not just memorise facts. They will be trained to understand concepts and apply knowledge in real life.
How the classroom will change
Schools affiliated with BSB will adopt learner-centred teaching methods. A multilingual approach to education will also be introduced, along with age-appropriate curriculum structures suited to different levels of development.
The goal is to ensure that students build both conceptual understanding and practical skills — preparing them not just for exams, but for real-world challenges.
21st century skills at the core
The Bhartiya Shiksha Board has laid out a clear purpose for this new direction. The curriculum aims to embed 21st century skills into everyday learning. These include:
– Critical thinking
– Creativity
– Collaboration
– Effective communication
– Digital literacy
– Problem-solving
The focus is on making students capable of thriving in a fast-changing global environment.
Indian knowledge tradition gets its place
Along with modern skills, the new curriculum also brings Indian knowledge traditions into the classroom in a meaningful way. The framework draws from India’s civilisational heritage, core values, and indigenous knowledge systems.
The Bhartiya Shiksha Board was born out of a resolve taken by Swami Ramdev and Acharya Balkrishna a few years ago to uproot the colonial model of education from India. The Government of India backed this vision and gave it institutional strength by establishing the BSB board. This initiative falls under the National Education Policy of the Indian government.
Chairman’s statement
Dr. NP Singh, IAS (Retired), Chairman of the Bhartiya Shiksha Board, said that true education is not limited to textbooks and examinations. It must nurture the mind, body, and soul, and equip individuals with the skills needed to make a positive impact on society and the nation in the modern world.
He called this a significant national milestone, one that establishes BSB as a leading institution in translating education policy into actual classroom practice.
With this announcement, the Bhartiya Shiksha Board has become the first school board in India to ensure comprehensive and complete implementation of the National Curriculum Framework across the full school education cycle. The academic session 2026-27 will mark the formal beginning of what the board calls the rise of a “new India”, one no longer shaped by a colonial education system.
