Yumnam Khemchand Singh of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) was on Monday today elected as the new Speaker of Manipur Legislative Assembly.
Khemchand, a legislator from Singjamei constituency, was elected Speaker by voice vote when the House assembled this morning ahead of the floor test by N Biren Singh government.

Among those present in the rebel camp was former state minister Firhad Hakim, popularly known as Bobby, once considered a close confidant of Mamata Banerjee.
The letter pleads the Speaker to "decline to accord any recognition, status, or facility to any purported separate group or faction of the AITC."
The House accomplished its principal task of finally passing the ₹6,10,956-crore state budget for the fiscal year 2026–27 on February 27.
