In a shocking incident, a 27-year-old woman delivered of a baby at the verandah of a government-run hospital without medical assistance on Monday bringing strong reactions from local people here. Krishnalata Swain of Mutunia village was under treatment in private gynaecologist in Balikuda area.

On Monday she complained of pain and her husband called the 102 ambulance which did not respond. He then took her on a cycle to the Balikuda community health care centre. She virtually collapsed on the verandah of the CHC. Her husband called for the doctor and nurse but she could not be shifted to the labour room and there was no gynaecologist or nurse available.

Krishnalata delivered a baby boy without any help. Niranjan Swain, husband of the lady said, “We kept calling the nurses to help my pregnant wife. But they did not attend her saying the time was not due. She gave birth without any medical help”. “Even after the baby was born, the staff didn’t visit her. Instead, they asked us to take the baby to them.

The two have been shifted to the district headquarter hospital”. Hearing the news, irate people gheored Balikuda CHC and demanded action against errant doctors and nurses for not attending the duty. Medical Officer of Balikuda CHC Mr Ajaya Swain said, “In the absence of doctor and nurse, the other staff ought to have shifted the patient to the labour room.” “Inquiry is going to take action against errant staff.

The condition of child and mother is stable,” he added. Of the two posts of gynaecologist in Balikuda CHC, one post is vacant while the other doctor is on leave.
