A woman has been arrested for allegedly assaulting cops to prevent them from arresting a criminal in south Delhi’s Fatehpuri Beri so that he could escape, officials said on Thursday.
The woman, who is said to be a relative of the criminal, Md Azam, along with her accomplices, created ruckus and attacked members of a Delhi Police team.

On Monday, when the police team, acting on the directions of a local court, arrived in the Chandan Hola area in Fatehpur Beri with a non-bailable warrant to arrest Azam, they were waylaid and assaulted by locals. What’s more, they even tore apart their uniforms and inflicted injuries on them.
The police, on Wednesday, said the wanted criminal, Azam, a known ‘bad character’ in the area, was previously booked for allegedly assaulting a policeman in a bid to obstruct him from carrying out his duty.
“On Monday, a team from Fatehpur Beri police station reached the area to make a formal arrest. However, Azam’s family and his associates charged at the police team, helping the accused to escape,” a senior officer said.
Adding to his statement, he mentioned, “The incident took place at around 6.30 pm. Locals purportedly filmed the attack on the police team in the middle of a street. In one of these videos, four to six people, including a woman, are seen kicking a police officer lying on the ground.”
In the vidoe, a police van is seen arriving with more personnel only to be ‘barred’ from entering the locality. In another video, the attackers, including Azam, are seen running away from the police. Some of them were also armed with sticks.
The officer said, “The police team was outnumbered as both men and women were involved in the attack. Several staff members suffered injuries.”
Meanwhile, Azam managed to flee taking advantage of the scuffle. The injured cops were admitted to AIIMS Trauma Centre, where MLCs were made. However, they were discharged after first aid.
The police said in July this year, Azam had similarly ‘restricted’ staff while trying to carry out a police verification exercise in the area under anti-terror measures. They said when they were questioning owners and tenants, Azam intervened, misbehaving with the police personnel.
A case was lodged against him, but he failed to appear for the proceedings. Hence a non-bailable warrant was issued against him On Monday.
Police teams have been dispatched to apprehend Azam and his relatives. Meanwhile, senior officials said the locals (who helped the family) and the people who filmed the incident are also being questioned.
