Calling the election of Vithalbhai Jhaverbhai Patel as President of the Central Legislative Assembly in 1925 a decisive step in India’s democratic journey, Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta said it broke the shackles of slavery and ignited the flame of democracy in the country.

Gupta was addressing the All India Speakers’ Conference held here today. “On 24 August 1925, exactly a hundred years ago, during the British Raj, Vithalbhai Jhaverbhai Patel was elected President of the Central Legislative Assembly—the first Indian to hold this position. It marked a turning point in breaking the shackles of slavery and igniting the flame of democracy in India,” she said.

Gupta added that Patel enhanced the pride of all Indians by defeating the British nominee and envisioned an independent nation where policies would be framed under its own Constitution and flag, and where assemblies would safeguard the rights of the people.

Highlighting Patel’s tenure as President of the Central Legislative Assembly, the Chief Minister said he established the highest standards of parliamentary dignity and discipline. His impartiality, legal acumen, and legislative knowledge earned him respect even from the opposition.

Gupta also praised efforts to bring Patel’s legacy to the people through exhibitions, documentaries, and a commemorative postage stamp. She expressed her gratitude to Home Minister Amit Shah, saying his dignified presence had made the event even more historic.

Welcoming participants, the Chief Minister noted that in the past six months, the Delhi Legislative Assembly had introduced initiatives such as solar energy, e-Vidhan, and e-filing, setting new benchmarks for transparency and good governance.

Over the next two days, the conference will deliberate on various issues, and delegates will also visit the Panchteerth sites dedicated to Babasaheb Bhimrao Ambedkar in Delhi. Concluding her address, Gupta said that being a witness to this historic conference was a privilege for all.
