Valley observes shutdown to protest Wani’s killing

A shutdown was observed in Kashmir on Friday to protest killing of a Ph.D. scholar turned- terrorist Manan Bashir Wani in an encounter with security forces on Thursday.

Manan along with his associate Ashiq Zargar was killed in Kupwara district. Call for shutdown was given by the separatists.

Authorities imposed restrictions in downtown Srinagar to prevent the situation from turning violent. Jama Masjid area of the city witnessed a virtual curfew which did not allow Friday prayers to be performed in mosque.

Curfew-like conditions also prevailed in Wani’s hometown Lolab in North Kashmir.

Education institutions in Kashmir were closed as a precautionary measure. Trains on Baramulla-Banihal route and internet services were also suspended.

Meanwhile, a separatist Sheikh Abdul Rashid along with his supporters staged a protest in Srinagar against the killing of Wani. He appealed people to boycott the coming municipal elections.
