A group of Toto drivers in Raiganj intercepted and shattered the windscreen of a North Bengal State Transport Corporation (NBSTC) bus and thrashed the driver severely near the Mahanbati bus stop in Raiganj, North Dinajpur district, on Thursday.

The Toto drivers acted after a Toto crashed with a Bhatolbound NBSTC bus outside the Raiganj bus depot. A passenger of the bus was injured when Toto drivers pelted the bus with stones.

Following the incident, drivers of the NBSTC blocked the Hospital Road in front of the Raiganj NBSTC depot and demanded immediate arrest of the accused Toto drivers involved in the vandalism.

The road block was lifted after intervention of the police. According to locals, a Bhatol- bound NBSTC bus, while departing from the Raiganj depot this morning, slightly hit a Toto rickshaw, allegedly because it was parked too close to the gate of the NBSTC depot.

Following the collision, a group of Toto drivers chased the bus and caught it on the busy road at Mahanbati and thrashed the driver, it is learnt.

“They started hurling stones after stopping he bus. They then shattered the windscreen and even forced the driver to get down and beat him up. In protest, NBSTC drivers blocked the road and raised their voice against the Toto drivers,” sources said.

Divisional Manager of the NBSTC Raiganj depot, Subir Saha said, “An FIR has been lodged at the Raiganj police station against two Toto drivers. Police had already been told not to allow a Toto stand in front of our depot for the convenience of passengers. We demand police to arrest them soon.”

Inspector-In-Charge, Raiganj police station, Sumanta Biswas said they have arrested two persons, Kesab Mandal and Biki Saha, in connection with the incident. “We have started investigations into the incident,” he said.
