The three day street-play festival, ‘Saraabor’, kicked off in the Sector 17 plaza here on Saturday.
Organised by Alankar theatre with the assistance of Drame-e-Baaz theatre society, 25 teams from various parts of the country are participating in the festival with the motto – ‘why complete when we can celebrate’. The carnival was inaugurated at the Punjab Kala Bhawan at Sector 16.
On Saturday, the festival began at noon with rhythmic Yoga performed by DAV college at Sector 10. Founder of Alankar theatre Chankresh Kumar told The Statesman that in earlier times “Nukkad natak” used to bring people close to each other and also raise awareness about social evils in society.

“But, at present one person doesn’t want to talk to another person. Life is shifting into apartments and people have somehow forgotten to communicate with each other. This is our small effort to fill that gap which technology has taken in our life,” he said.
Kumar said the sole aim if the carnival is to provide a liberal artistic platform to students, where they can experiment, test and try their creativity with no burden of coming first or second. Each team that has been selected will be rewarded, he said.
Eight street plays will be performed in a span of three days. Teams from different states will be performing on issues of their choice. Along with the street plays there would be poetry sessions and theatre talks. Flash mobs and rhythmic yoga will also be performed.
