Before this campaign, most people in rural and peri-urban areas were forced to defecate in the open. Through this initiative, about 12 crore toilets were constructed nationwide, giving rural women dignity and safety, he added.
The minister further said that Delhi’s “Freedom from Garbage” cleanliness campaign, being carried out under the leadership of Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, is inspired by this mega mission — the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan.
He urged the residents to actively cooperate with sanitation workers — our true Swachhata Doots — and to carry out regular cleanliness activities during the Seva Pakhwada to fulfil the campaign’s objectives.
He emphasized that this campaign will play a decisive role in achieving the goal of a developed Delhi.
He also appealed to people to segregate wet and dry waste and deposit it in designated bins or municipal vehicles, saying that if citizens dispose of waste in the proper compartments of garbage trucks, Delhi will soon develop into a clean and beautiful city.
He also urged them to stop using single-use plastic and to instil the habit of cleanliness in their children so that it becomes part of their values.
“Delhi will only become developed and safe when it becomes clean,” he added.
On the occasion, the minister also planted saplings under the Prime Minister’s call of “Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam 2.0” and appealed to all citizens to plant at least one tree each.
“Tree plantation is not only a step toward protecting the environment, but also a pledge to provide our future generations with clean air and a green future,” he added.
