A young singer has been arrested along with his relative on charges of attempted extortion in a bid to raise money for his video shoots.

The matter came to the notice of the police when a milk trader approached the Civil Lines police station with a complaint of getting extortion calls.

“He came to us on February 14 and told that he is getting calls demanding Rs 10 lakh from some aide of gangster Monu Jat who is currently in Meerut jail,” said SP (rural) Rajesh Kumar.

The investigation in the case was handed over to the crime branch. Police got information on Friday that those making the extortion calls are somewhere near Children’s Park.

Working on this tip, a joint team of crime branch and Civil Lines police caught hold of the suspected criminals on two motorcycles near the Cooperative bank.

The duo was taken to the police station and identified as Atul Malik alias Raftar Malik of Bahawdi village in Shamli district and Sarthak Singh Jakhar of Karnawal village in Meerut district.

The duo told the cops that they are distant relatives and Sarthak is a singer who often uploads his videos on YouTube. He told the police that it was becoming difficult for him to meet expenses for shooting videos. Hence he took to the path of crime with the help of his relative Atul.

He used to buy milk from this milk trader and hence thought of extorting Rs 10 lakh from him. He shared his plan with Atul and thereafter they robbed a mobile phone from Pallavpuram locality on February 14.

They used the phone to make extortion calls to the milk trader. To make it sound more authentic they asked for the money in the name of jailed gangster Monu.

Police have recovered two mobile phones, a motorcycle and two country made pistols from their possession.
