The 83rd Balidan Diwas of Shaheed Major Durga Malla was observed on Monday in Siliguri, coinciding with the 62nd Foundation Day of the Siliguri Devkota Sangh. The commemorative programme was attended by Darjeeling MP Raju Bista as the chief guest.
It was recalled that on this day in 1944, Major Durga Malla had laid down his life for India’s independence. His contribution, along with that of several other Gorkha freedom fighters such as Captain Ram Singh Thakuri, Dal Bahadur Giri, and Helen Lepcha, was remembered with deep reverence. The names of Damber Gurung and Ari Bahadur Gurung, members of the Constituent Assembly from Kalimpong, were also highlighted for their role in shaping India’s democratic foundation.

Cultural presentations by children were staged during the programme, symbolising the passing of traditions to the younger generation. Eminent musicians were also honoured with the “Sangeet Arohi Samman,” which was conferred on Shanti Thatal, Ashok Rai, principal Govind Singh Ghatani, Jiban Adhikari, principal Dev Kumar Pradhan, and Narbir Rasaily.
The contribution of Siliguri Devkota Sangh in preserving the language, culture, and traditions of the Gorkha community over the past six decades was also acknowledged.
Speaking on the occasion, MP Bista said: “The sacrifices of our Gorkha forefathers must continue to inspire our youth. It is our duty to make future generations aware of this glorious legacy so that they may feel pride in their heritage.”
The programme was attended by Sangh president Milan Ruchal, former IG Saroj Gazmer, social worker Naresh Agarwal, and other community members.
