Shimla district gears up to adopt fire safety measures

Learning lessons from the recent fire tragedy in Mumbai, the Shimla district administration has geared up to take fire safety measures in Shimla.

In a written communiqué to the Chief Fire Officer, Shimla and Municipal Corporation Shimla, Deputy Commissioner (DC) Shimla, Rohan Chand Thakur has directed them to begin the exercise in coordination, to immediately adopt fire safety measures in all the important public places of Shimla city.

They have also been directed to identify vulnerable points in important public points in Shimla.
The important places include restaurants, hotels and also similar establishments in congested areas like The Mall Road, Middle Bazaar, Lower Bazaar areas, maintains the orders issued by the DC.

These places have been specified owing to the higher vulnerability caused by nature of construction in the areas.
Rohan Chand Thakur confirming of the directions issued said, “Besides, the Shimla city, the other towns in Shimla district are also being incorporated for the safety exercise. I have directed the Chief Fire Officer, J C Sharma has also been requested to issue similar instructions in the sub-divisional offices to carry out similar exercise in vulnerable pockets of the various towns in their jurisdiction.”

It is pertinent to mention that during cold winters most of the parts of the state is in danger of fires especially during December to January. Shimla city is vulnerable to electrical fire risks and also owing to the presence of heritage buildings and old houses which contain more wood as building material that often catch fire due to negligence and owing to ineffective fire management on people’s part.
