The security guard of a cash van was shot dead and another was injured when bike-borne miscreants opened fire in a daring robbery outside the Raj Bhawan in the heart of Lucknow on Monday.

According to reports, the miscreants fired on the two security guards while they were guarding the cash van outside a bank in the vicinity of high-security zone outside the residence of the Governor of Uttar Pradesh.

ADG, Law-Order, Anand Kumar said that a probe is underway and the police are trying to trace the bike. He confirmed the death of a security guard and said that the dacoits fled with a bag they picked from the van.

The shocking crime happened on a major road where traffic is usually heavy in the daytime. Witnesses said that they heard gunshots.

Police found a gun near the site of the shooting. It is suspected that it belongs to one of the shooters.

The incident happened just a day after Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s mega address to businessmen and industrialists in Lucknow.

Reacting to the incident, former Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav questioned the assurances of security made by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath’s government.

“The robbery right under the noses of the CM and the Raj Bhawan has put the state in fear. Nothing is safe at the place where just a day ago there was the highest level of security for ‘special’ persons. Let us see what excuse this ‘encounter’ government gives,” said the Samajwadi Party president referring to the series of encounters of criminals under the Yogi government.
