The Uttar Pradesh police started its investigation into the charges levelled against Samajwadi party MLA Nahid Hasan by the family of a gangrape victim. The father of the victim has accused the MLA from Kairana of threatening him on phone after the former accused some men of committing the heinous crime against his daughter.

In a complaint lodged on Saturday in the Gangoh police station at Saharanpur, the father of the victim said that Hasan asked him to withdraw the names of the accused or face dire consequences. Hasan is a strongman in the area. His mother, Tabassum Hasan, is the newly-elected MP from Kairana.

Jitendra, Inspector of Gangoh Police Station, confirmed that a complaint against Hasan has been registered and that further action would be taken after investigation.

The complainant has reportedly recorded the conversation with the MLA in which threats were issued and handed it over to the police as evidence. Police are now confirming its authenticity.

Inspector Jitendra said that the police will find out whether the charges on the persons named in the FIR are true or not.

Attempts were made to contact the MLA for his comment but his phone went unanswered.

Hasan is from an influential political family. His late father, Munawar Hasan, was an MP from Kariana. His mother won the seat on a Rasthriya Lok Dal (RLD) ticket in the bypolls held in May defeating Mriganka Singh of the BJP. The bypoll was necessitated after the death of suiting MP Hukum Singh –Mriganka Singh’s father.

Hasan had defeated Mriganka in the 2017 assembly election.
