The central government’s ministry of health and family welfare’s decision to allow NIT Rourkela to set up a medical college has been welcomed by people here.

The approval is just the beginning of a long journey said, Dr. B Acharya, head of the public relation of the institute. He said, “Now we will prepare the detailed report of the project and then send it to the ministry for its final approval and then it will be forwarded to the Medical Council of India (MCI) .”

“We have an initial plan of having a 300 bed hospital, here, and the intake will be decided only after the DPR is ready for approval.” The DPR will be sent around July for the approval of the ministry.

He also further added, “We have the required land in our disposal so there will be no problem for setting up a medical college along with hospital.”

Meanwhile, speaking about the other aspects of the hospital cum college Registrar NIT Rourkela S Upadhyaya said, “We have 135 acres of land in our campus so finding the necessary 25 acres for the project will not be a difficult task.”

We may request SAIL for additional land, just adjacent to the main campus, he added. Presently the NIT Rourkela has a strength of 6,000 and this need to go up to 10,000 to achieve any global status. “Besides, with only engineering and related studies this is not possible, so we need to multi discipline.

And at this stage we have microbiology, business administration, and in future we look forward to include law and medicine, and this is the first step in that direction,” said Upadhyay.

Meanwhile, the Congress here has reacted sharply. Former MLA Prabhat Mohapatra said, “We welcome this we would like an answer from the Modi government on what happened to the proposal of upgrading the Ispat General Hospital to a medical college. The Prime Minister Narendra Modi had promised this four years ago, he remarked.
