Odisha CM proposes inclusion of Ahmisa in Constitution’s Preamble

CM Naveen Patnaik

Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik on Wednesday proposed that “Ahimsa” be included in the Preamble of the Constitution. He suggested amendment to the Constitution to include “Ahimsa” in its preamble.

Participating in the meeting at Rashtrapati Bhavan, Delhi, to celebrate 150th Birth Anniversary of Gandhiji, the Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik said the greatest tribute India could pay to the Mahatma is to include the uniquely Indian ideal of Ahmisa, non-violence in the Preamble of the Constitution.

The most important aspect of Mahatma Gandhi’s doctrine of non-violence is that poverty and social injustice are the greatest violence. To remove poverty is the greatest task faced by any Government. This cannot be achieved without nonviolence. Progress requires peace, said the Chief Minister.

Progress requires the defeat of those who divide society on the basis of class, caste or religion, he noted. The inclusion of Ahimsa to the Preamble will ensure that future generations, not just of Indians, but also people around the world, will be reminded of the profound truth of this principle, stated Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik, informed a release issued by the CMO here on Wednesday.
