The much awaited mine void filling of slurry produced by NTPC power plant will take place after two years, according to the executive director (ED) of NTPC Kaniha Ram Kuber. The NTPC ED said so while interacting with journalists at the plant site on Thursday.

He said the abandoned coalmine named Jaganath at Talcher has been allotted by the ministry of forest and environment (MOEF) of centre recently paving the way for the work. The slurry produced from the power plant will be dumped in to the void coalmine by crossing more than 30 kms from Kaniha to Talcher.

“The necessary ground work for the initiating the project has already begun with floating of tender by the power major and all other works will be expedited to finish the project within two years” Kuber said. Stating that NTPC needs expansion of its existing ash dyke at village Derenge for the sustenance of the power plant, Kuber felt frequent obstruction by the agitating villagers has resulted in delay and consequent saturation of the capacity at the ash pond.

He said NTPC wants to raise its ash dyke from current 35 to 55 meter as permitted. “With all these maintenance works the ash pond life is till 2023 then NTPC has to have alternative ash pond for the running of the power plant. He said “ the power plant is crucial to the nation and all the stake holders including the local villagers has to extend constructive cooperation to the power plant authorities.

Let us resolve all of our issues across the table”. Referring to Brahmani water pollution by the plant, he said the plant can not discharge its slurry properly due to problems at the ash pond . NTPC Kaniha supplies power to 17 states and its sustenance is crucial for the nation.
