No lake formation at Gaumukh: Experts

A team of experts have conducted an aerial survey of the Gaumukh on Thursday and found no lake formation has taken place in district Uttarkashi.

The Uttarakhand government has send a team of experts after media report on a massive landslide along the course of Bhagirathi river, near the snout of the Gangotri glacier and the possibility of blockade of river and the formation of lake.

In its interim report the team states, “No lake was observed in the area along the course of river Bhagirathi and the flow of the river was observed to be un-interrupted and normal.”

As the aerial survey was conducted in bad weather and in high speed wind, the chopper failed to descend below 500 feet. For getting a clear picture the team has suggested conducting a ground survey in March-April, when the snow melting occurs.

Rejecting the media reports, the team asserts there is no imminent danger from the landslide that had occurred during rainy season of 2017 near the snout of the Gangotri glacier and at present their is no lake along the course of the river.
