A 39-year-old criminal, who was wanted in multiple cases of murder and armed dacoity, was shot dead by a joint team of Delhi Police’s Special Staff and the Gurugram Crime Branch during an encounter near the Astha Kunj Park in southeast Delhi, an official said on Tuesday.

According to the officials, the accused, Bhim Mahabahadur Jora, who was originally from Nepal, was wanted for the murder of a 63-year-old general physician, Yogesh Chander Paul, during a robbery at his residence in Jangpura in May 2024.

Jora allegedly headed a Nepali gang that placed its members as domestic staff in wealthy Indian households across major cities.

“Once they had gained the families’ trust, the gang members allegedly used sleep-inducing drugs to incapacitate them before stealing cash and valuables, at times resorting to violence or even murder,” said Hemant Tiwari, Deputy Commissioner of Police (southeast).

The officer, in his statement, continued by saying that the shootout happened on the intervening night of Monday and Tuesday when a joint team of Delhi and Haryana Police received intel about the accused’s movement in Delhi.

“The accused, absconding since the Jangpura murder, is believed to have avoided apprehension by making repeated cross-border movements into Nepal,” DCP Tiwari said.

“A trap was laid near the Astha Kunj Park, where the accused was spotted around midnight. When police asked him to surrender, he opened fire at them, prompting retaliatory firing in self-defence,” the DCP said.

The accused fired two shots that hit the bulletproof vests of Inspector Narender Sharma of Gurugram Police and SI Shubham Chaudhary of Delhi Police, narrowly missing both men, he said.

Police fired two shots in self-defence, aiming for Jora’s legs. However, one bullet struck his chest, critically injuring him. He later succumbed to his injuries, the officer said.

Police rushed the accused to the AIIMS Trauma Centre, where the doctors declared him brought dead.

During the spot inspection, police recovered one automatic pistol and six empty cartridges used by Jora, one live round, and five empty cartridges fired by police.

Upon inspection of the crime scene, police found Jora’s automatic pistol, six of his spent cartridges, one live round, and five empty shells from police weapons.

In May 2024, Jora, along with his associates, unlawfully entered the residence of Dr Paul in Jangpura and inflicted fatal injuries on the victim during the course of a robbery.

The investigation took a turn when police apprehended one Basanti, employed as domestic help in the victim’s home.

“Jora and his accomplices managed to avoid arrest by fleeing to Nepal for nearly 16 months. Recent intelligence on his movements near Delhi prompted a joint operation by Delhi and Gurugram police, which culminated in his neutralisation,” according to the DCP.

Gurugram Police was tracking him in connection with two recent cases registered in the city.

Jora, aka Bhim Mahavir Jora, headed a criminal gang of Nepali nationals active across Delhi, Gujarat, Karnataka, Uttar Pradesh, and Haryana, the officer stated. The gang targeted affluent families in major cities by taking advantage of placement agencies.

Active since 2014, Jora had been linked to five other cases of dacoity, burglary, and murder registered across multiple states.

The weapon used by Jora, along with ballistic evidence, has been sent for forensic analysis, the DCP said.
