A suspected drug overdose at a music concert in Mumbai’s Goregaon East has left two MBA students dead, with police intensifying their probe and arresting six people so far, including the event organiser and an alleged drug supplier.

The incident, which occurred during a concert on April 11, has raised fresh concerns about drug use at large public gatherings, especially involving students attending such events in the city.

According to Mumbai Police, around 15 to 16 students from a reputed Mumbai college were present at the concert. Investigators found that one of the deceased had consumed an ecstasy pill while travelling to the venue in a cab and later took another pill during the event. Medical professionals have confirmed that the intake of two doses led to a fatal overdose.

The second student’s death is also suspected to be linked to drug consumption, police said, adding that both victims had taken narcotic substances.

Arrests and recovery

Two students have been taken into custody in connection with the case. Police have also arrested the alleged supplier, from whom 6 to 7 ecstasy pills were recovered.

Further investigation led to the arrest of three individuals associated with NESCO, including a Vice President from the event management team.

Probe widens beyond Mumbai

Early leads suggest the drugs did not originate in Mumbai, pushing investigators to look beyond the city as they track where the supply came from and how it reached the concert.

Officials said they are examining the supply chain and identifying others who may have been involved in facilitating the drugs at the event.

Meanwhile, a video from the concert showing attendees dancing has gone viral on social media, bringing wider public attention to the case.

The NESCO Centre has said it is cooperating with the investigation. In a statement, a spokesperson said, “We understand the seriousness of the situation and are extending our full cooperation to the concerned authorities in their ongoing investigation. All relevant information and assistance are being provided to ensure that the facts are established at the earliest.”
