The Static Surveillance Team (SST) Thursday seized unaccounted for cash worth Rs 34 lakh from 14 traders in Indore ahead of the next month’s assembly elections in Madhya Pradesh, an official said.

The money is suspected to be linked to Hawala operations.

The SST was constituted by the district election authorities to check the flow of illegal money ahead of the elections, scheduled to be held on November 28.

“The money was seized from 14 people at a commercial complex, located on RNT Road, in the city,” a Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) said.

He said the people in possession of the money failed to explain its source.

“An enquiry is being conducted, as it is suspected that the money is linked to Hawala operations,” he said, adding that Income Tax department has been informed about the seizure.
