Amid growing confusion over the compensation amount, Raniganj BJP MLA Partha Ghosh assured a victim of the Taratala building collapse saying that the state government would extend all possible support.

Ghosh visited the residence of Naveen Singh at Layekbandh on behalf of the state government to stand beside them during the difficult period.

“I have come on behalf of the state government to assure the family that we are standing beside them in this hour of crisis and all support and facilities due to them will be provided as early as possible,” he said.

Confusion arose after the family reportedly received a communication stating that a cheque of Rs 4 lakh would soon be handed over to them.

The development triggered uncertainty since Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari had earlier announced a compensation of Rs 10 lakh for the families of each of the 16 victims of the Taratala tragedy, while Prime Minister Narendra Modi had separately announced an ex-gratia payment of Rs 2 lakh.

Naveen Singh had been working as a construction labourer at the Taratala building site and was operating a cement mixing machine when the structure collapsed.

He got trapped beneath the debris and died in the accident. Singh was the sole earning member of his family and is survived by his wife and young children.

Apart from government assistance, BJP leaders also indicated that financial support would be extended to the family.

Family members, meanwhile, demanded strict punishment for those responsible for the incident.

“This is a very tragic incident and such incidents should never recur in the state again. The family is extremely poor and after visiting the house I will also submit my own assessment report to the government,” Ghosh said.

He further said that he would meet the District Magistrate of West Burdwan, S. Ponnamballam, regarding the issue and seek clarification on compensation concerns raised by the family.

“I will discuss the matter with the district administration and try to resolve the concerns regarding the full compensation amount for the family,” he said.

Ghosh added that chief minister Suvendu Adhikari was personally monitoring compensation and other issues related to the Taratala tragedy and expressed hope that those responsible for the incident would face action. More than 16 construction workers were killed in the Taratala building collapse.
