The central motto of the drive is to project the message of ‘Swachhata’ through intensive public participation and robust interdepartmental action. The civic body has urged Kolkata’s residents to work in tandem with civic workers to keep their neighborhoods and public spaces clean.
The KMC has launched a fieldwork schedule to this effect from June 16 to June 20.
On the first day, June 16, religious sites and parks have been targeted under which intensive cleaning would be carried out across major landmarks like Kalighat Temple, Parasnath Temple, ISKCON Temple, Gurudwara Bhawanipur, and Nakhoda Masjid.
The second day, June 17, focuses on Shramdaan or labour, under which 20,000 active participants will be mobilised. These would include prominent NGOs like the Art of Living and Bharat Sevashram Sangha, alongside schools, colleges, and associations in collaboration with Confederation of West Bengal Traders’ Associations in every park across the state including Kolkata.
On the third day, June 18, sanitation drives will be conducted in markets and transport hubs targeting 60 critical locations. These would include Sealdah Railway Station, Esplanade Bus Stand, Lansdowne Market, Lake Market, and Gariahat Market.
The fourth day, June 19, will focus on ghats and water bodies under which floating garbage would be removed from the Hooghly river. Major riverfront cleanups will also be organised across 14 ghats including Princep Ghat, Gwalior Ghat, and Babu Ghat.
A massive city-wide drive and blackspot elimination would be carried out on the fifth day, June 20, under which 195 chronic blacksports will be removed. These would include locations like CIT Poddar Court, Gurusaday Road, APC Road, Mullick Bazar, and Ruby Crossing Road.
One of the unique focus of this campaign is the rejuvenation of the Adi Ganga channel, targeting a 6.5-kilometer stretch from the Sahid Khudiram Metro Station to river Hooghly’s confluence point.
A specialized drive, led by the Planning and Development department will systematically clean, desilt, and beautify 14 key ghats to improve public access and restore the riverfront environment.
The civic body has set a target to collect 5,796 Metric Tonnes of total solid waste and clean 340 kilometers of road length across 50 major city roads. Deep sub-surface desilting operations will also achieve 90,000 kilograms of manhole desilting, empty 3,32,500 kilograms of gully pit waste, and execute 500 meters of intensive canal cleaning. This will also include cleanup of pavements and bridges.
The civic body has appealed all offices in Kolkata, shop owners and local market associations, Resident Welfare Associations, Housing Societies, hospitals, clinics, builders and developers, and all citizens to actively participate in this drive.
