Kolkata got drenched under a spell of heavy rainfall on Tuesday afternoon, with trees uprooted at several places around Park Street causing traffic snarls and upsetting commuters.

Visuals from the place showed trees uprooted and littered across the streets, some even landing on vehicles parked underneath. These have led to traffic congestion across several major roads in the city.

The gusty winds have also dismantled several temporary road dividers which were seen scattered all over the road, creating increasing risk for commuters.

Meanwhile in north Bengal, five workers were electrocuted at Paschim Balabari area of Rajganj while they were working at an electric tower at Sannyasikata Gram Panchayat on Tuesday morning. They have been taken to Uttarbanga Medical College for treatment. Police said that maintenance work at the power grid was ongoing when the incident took place. It will be investigated whether adequate precautions were taken at the time of the incident.

In another incident, a woman died after being hit by a thunder strike at Mathabhanga-Sitalkuchi area in Cooch Behar district. The deceased has been identified as Maneka Burman (59). As per local sources, she had gone out in the rain to bring in a cow beside her residence, when the incident took place. The police have started a investigation into the matter.

The India Meterological Department (IMD) had earlier warned that light to medium rainfall may hit several parts of south Bengal, including districts like Howrah, Hooghly, North and South 24 Parganas, Purba and Paschim Medinipur, Jhargham, Purulia, Bankura, Purba and Paschim Bardhaman, Birbhum, Murshidabad and Nadia.

The weather office had also forecasted that districts like Jalpaiguri and Alipurduar in north Bengal may also receive heavy to very heavy rainfall. The IMD has also issued an orange alert in these districts.

The IMD had also predicted heavy rainfall in Darjeeling, Coochbehar and Kalimpong districts, along with gusty winds blowing at the speed of 30-40 km per hour. The met office has issued a yellow alert in these three districts.

On Friday, the intensity of railfall in north Bengal may increase further, IMD said.
