Kanwariyas thronged various temples across Delhi in large numbers to offer ‘Jal Abhishek’ to Lord Shiva on the auspicious occasion of ‘Shravan Sivratri’ on Wednesday.

Devotional songs and hymns dedicated to Lord Shiva resonated across the city, especially in the rural belt where the temples were especially decorated with flowers to welcome the Kanwar pilgrims bringing holy Ganga Jal (water) to offer the deity.

The devotees, who started heading to the Shiva temples early in the morning, were filled with great enthusiasm and fervour. They were carrying with them flowers, milk, and other items to offer the deity.

During the month of ‘Sawan’, they seek blessings from Lord Shiva, who is among the most revered deities in the Hindu pantheon, the other two being Lord Brahma and Lord Vishnu. They also observe fast on Mondays as according to tradition, those who observe fast during ‘Sawan’ purify their mind and body, apart from achieving their overall spiritual growth.

The Delhi government made elaborate arrangements for the Kanwar Yatra in view of the Shravan Shivratri. Kanwar camps were built across the city, especially at the border points from where the pilgrims enter the city, for smooth transit during the festivitive occasion.
