Jajpur RTO’s death on NH-215 road mishap sparks suspicion of foul play

The death of Jajpur town Regional Transport Officer (RTO) Manoj Kumar Behera in a road accident near Nuapada chhak on NH- 215 late Sunday night, triggered suspicion of foul play. Behera died on the spot when a heavy vehicle dashed him from behind while he was inspecting vehicles carrying smuggled minerals along with two of his office staff near Nuapada chhak on NH-215 late last night.

Two officials of RTO who were assisting to Behera in carrying out checking of vehicles escaped unhurt. According to the Korei police, a patrolling team of the Jajpur town RTO led by Behera was carrying out checking of trucks moving on the National Highway-215 near Nuapada chhak at about 11.45 p.m. “Behera saw a chips laden truck coming and waved at the driver to stop.

While he was checking papers of the chips laden truck on road, another over loading truck dashed him from behind leading to his death at the spot,” said Chinmayee Sahu , inspector- in-charge of Korei police station.Jajpur SP, Charan Singh Meena has directed Jajpur Road Sub Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) Kedarnath Sahoo to inquire into the circumstances leading to the accident.

Police have seized the truck and arrested its helper who sustained grievous injuries. However, the driver of the truck managed to flee from the scene soon after the accident. “From the investigation so far, we have not found anything to suggest any foul play.

We will, however, examine all aspects before coming to a final conclusion,” SDPO Sahoo said. He said they were also questioning the staff of the RTO office who had accompanied the deceased.On being informed, Jajpur collector Ranjan Kumar Das, Jajpur Road tehasildar Sapan Kumar nanda, Jajpur SP, Jajpur Road SDPO, Korei and Panikoili police reached the spot last night.
