Delimitation reshapes Assam’s electoral map: Congress legacy faces transition, BJP strengthens grip
In a significant electoral overhaul, Assam braces for its first polls under the revamped parliamentary constituencies, slated for April 19.
Assam government has constituted an inquiry committee to probe into the death of Hasen Ali, a resident of Adakata village under Dhula police station in Darrang district on 9 January evening, and also the subsequent road blockade the next day that led to the death of Moidul Islam, a resident of Gorapori village during police firings.
The inquiry committee, was constituted vide a notification issued on 17 January and will be headed by Assam’s additional chief secretary MGVK Bhanu. The committee will submit its report within four weeks. It will also inquire whether there was any lapse on the part of police administration in tackl ing the road (NH-15) blockade.
Several others were wounded during clashes by the local people with police personnel a day after Hasen’s death, following which the district administration imposed curfew in the locality. It all started after Hasen Ali, a Muslim wage earner died a day after he was taken into custody by the police.

As the news of his death spread hundreds of local residents assembled in front of the police station demanding justice. Soon the situation turned violent as few protesters started pelting stones at the police on duty. Moidul died in police firing when the cops were trying to normalise the situation. Dhula police station’s officer- in-charge Ranjit Hazarika was suspended and subsequently arrested.
