Himachal prison authorities give wings to imprisoned mother

The efforts of prison authorities in Himachal Pradesh have helped in shaping the life of a 45-year-old woman inmate serving life sentence. She has been offered job of a peon in an educational institute in a Himachal district.

She has been living a life of despair inside the walls of her prison cell for nine years now. There seems to be some hope now for her as she is about to take up a new job on 1 November, for which she will be paid a monthly salary of Rs 7,936.

Director General of Police (Prisons and Correctional Services) Somesh Goyal said: “She will be the first woman prisoner in the open category to step out of the prison and earn a livelihood under the rehabilitation initiative of our department.”

While her eldest daughter is married, her younger daughter and her son are studying in classes X and IX respectively.

The younger daughter has been pursuing her studies from her maternal aunt’s house. Her son, taken over by depression and financial crisis, had almost decided to drop school. He stays at a Bal Ashram now.

The mother’s earning will now help the children get the much needed support in shaping their lives.

“During one of my recent visit to the area, we held a meeting with people from various industrial groups, some NGOs and Rotary Clubs to take up project with an objective to rehabilitate our inmates. We came by this offer then,” Mr said Goyal.

Sensitive to the plight of her family that was quite pitiable, the educational institute agreed to give her an opportunity to work for them and also help to bring her on track, he added.

She has exhibited good conduct during her stay in the jail so far and is said to be polite and soft spoken, said Mr Goyal, adding that this job will provide a transformative experience for her. “I am happy that despite the adversities, I will be able to be responsible towards my children, earn for them and contribute my efforts to build their future,” said the woman inmate.
