Ambedkar Jayanti

Intelligence agencies have been put on high alert in view of Ambedkar Jayanti on 14 April. This comes in the wake of widespread violence during the Bharat Bandh called by dalit organisations on 2 April against the “dilution” of the provisions of the SC/ST Act by the Supreme Court.

In order to avoid any kind of tension on Ambedkar Jayanti next week, peace committees have also been activated to ensure harmony among people.

Clear instructions have been given that processions and programmes will not be allowed to be carried out without prior permission, said SP City Maan Singh Chauhan, adding that police stations have been directed to forward applications for seeking permission for processions only after examining these minutely.

After the large-scale violence of 2 April, the police is in no mood to take any chances and has put local intelligence unit cops on alert.

Divisional commissioner Prabhat Kumar has appealed to parents not to allow their wards to participate in processions and meetings so that they are protected from any legal action in the event of anything untoward happening.

Meanwhile, officials have ordered a Special Investigation Team (SIT) headed by Maan Singh Chauhan to probe the cases of violence that occurred on 2 April. “Besides legal experts the SIT will include a team of 2 circle officers, 5 inspectors and 11 sub inspectors led by SP city and it will investigate all 71 cases registered in different police stations,” said SSP Manzil Saini.

A thorough investigation of these cases would be carried out so that those involved in the violence are brought to book, he added. The violence of 2 April had claimed the life of a young boy Ankur and left many, including cops injured.

On Friday evening, the police and administrative officials are carrying out a flag march starting from jali kothi which will conclude at the clock tower covering most parts of the old city area. DM, SSP, ADM city, SP city, all COs, SHOs , RAF and PAC are participating in the march.
