Governor Acharya Devvrat, who is also chancellor of Himachal Pradesh University (HPU), Shimla, has sought a report on the condition of varsity hostels from the authorities.

In a letter to Vice Chancellor of the University on 2 April, the Governor cited a The Statesman report ‘HPU hostels still grapple with basic problems’ and asked him to look into the matter and furnish a detailed reply within three days.

The Statesman had carried a news story in these columns on 2 April, highlighting the basic problems being faced by HPU hostellers with reference to the surprise visit of Governor six months back to hostels and the directions therein.

During his visit, the Governor had taken notice of the poor condition of the hostels and had strictly asked the varsity authorities to improve it immediately in the interest of students.

The hostellers were of the opinion that after Governor’s visit, the HPU authorities did take some measures. However, some problems continue to persist, with the authorities allegedly failing to take correctional measures in day-to-day affairs.

Officiating Vice Chancellor of HPU, Professor Rajender Singh Chauhan, when contacted, said the Governor has asked for the report. “Following this, I have sought detailed replies from the officials on maintenance of hostels,” he said. Chauhan said the hostels in the University have undergone positive changes and have improved a lot.
