If all goes as planned, residents of the Gangarampur Municipality will no longer face problems of water-logging. The municipality, which is situated on the banks of the river Punarbhaba, is going to get a new drainage system soon under a mega project that has been launched with a view to resolving the water-logging issue in the area.
The municipality will be working on the drainage system under the master plan in all the 18 wards, it is learnt. The project that began in the month of October last year is expected to completed within the month of September this year.
The construction work has already begun in all the wards. Each and every high drain will be connected with the Punarbhaba with modern sluice gates, it is learnt. “Problems related to the drainage system have not been solved since the very first municipal election in the year 1993,” a resident of the municipality said.

Sources claimed that Ward Nos 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 16, 13 and 12 are mostly affected due the poor drainage system, resulting in water logging, which is a very common problem every rainy season. “According to official sources at the Gangarampur municipality, the project is worth Rs 25 crore.
They have confirmed that the construction work has started in Ward 18, 16, 13, 12, where 80% of the work has already been completed. The remaining work will be done on ward no 6, 7, and 11 in the next phase,” an official said. “This is one of our dream projects.
Construction of high drains has almost completed. This will solve one of our biggest challenges. Four high drains from the east side and two high drains from the west side will be connected with the river Punarbhaba through modern sluice gates, which will be serving the people of Gangarampur for the next 50 years. Hope the problem of water logging will be solved soon,” said the Chairman of Gangarampur municipality, Prasanta Mitra.
