Chawla is new South Delhi mayor

BJP councillor Narender Chawla, was on Thursday elected unopposed as the mayor of South Delhi.

Chawla represents the Janakpuri West (15-S) ward in South Delhi Municipal Corporation. After his election he claimed that he would continue to work as per practice and high ethics established by his predecessor Kamaljeet Sehrawat.

Chawla along with the new deputy mayor, Satyapal Malik, who was also chosen unopposed, conducted the first meeting of the House.

Talking to media persons, Chawla stated his priorities were sanitation, health, education, parking and water conservation.

He said, “Swachhata Mission launched by Prime Minister will be implemented in SDMC with added commitment and enhanced public partnership as no campaign can prove to be result-oriented without active participation of people.”

Describing parking as a major problem, Chawla stated that DDA would be requested to sanction land for construction of number of stack parking after consultations with the RWAs and market associations.

Serious efforts would be made to commission dispensaries in those wards which were lacking health facilities, he added. On education, Chawala said that he will would hold discussion with the department and try to give due attention to every child in school.

The new mayor said, “certain cities in a number of countries have been finding acute shortage of drinking water and at many place the water has become rare due to drying up of the sources. To avoid such a situation in Delhi the people will be exhorted to conserve water.”

He added that an action plan would be prepared after discussions with experts and technocrats in water sector.

He also announced to launch a useful and purposeful helpline for redressal of grievances of residents on priority and maintain an updated data base. Chawla stated that he would soon start surprise inspections of all 104 wards to ensure similar development and amenities in the wards.
