Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Monday said that the government, while respecting the sentiments of the residents of the national capital, will request the Supreme Court to grant permission for the use of certified green firecrackers during the upcoming Diwali festivities.

Speaking to reporters at the Secretariat, Gupta said the government believes there must be a balance between environmental protection and public sentiments.

The Chief Minister stated that she feels the public should be allowed to celebrate the festival with enthusiasm, at least through the use of green firecrackers. Accordingly, the government will formally convey to the Supreme Court its intention to take responsibility for pollution control and to fully abide by the prescribed regulations.

She said the objective of this initiative is to further strengthen the government’s commitment to controlling pollution while also respecting the traditions and emotions of the people.

Gupta added that the Delhi government will ensure that all green firecrackers are manufactured only by authorized institutions, and are duly certified and tested by competent authorities.

Reiterating her government’s commitment to environmental protection, she assured that the Supreme Court will be informed that Delhi will fully comply with its directions and standards.

“Our aim is to ensure that the festivities are filled with joy, while keeping the environment safe and clean,” the Chief Minister said.

Highlighting the cultural significance of Diwali, Gupta noted that it is one of the most important festivals in India, deeply rooted in the emotions of the people. She added that, based on past experience, a complete ban on firecrackers has not produced the desired results. Despite restrictions, violations continued, leading to the use of highly polluting firecrackers that worsened Delhi’s air quality.

“Therefore, the government wishes to allow the use of certified green firecrackers in the city,” she said.

Gupta reaffirmed that the Delhi government remains unwavering in its commitment to environmental protection and will extend full cooperation to the central government and the Supreme Court in implementing any directions issued in this regard.

She also mentioned that allowing green firecrackers would help the city’s small traders and support the growth of local art and culture.

Currently, a ban on firecrackers is in place due to pollution concerns.
