Delhi Congress president Devender Yadav on Thursday called Chief Minister Rekha Gupta’s statement on Yamuna cleaning as rhetoric, and claimed that the 22km stretch of the river, from Palla to Okhla, again turned toxic after the rains stopped.

He claimed that the BJP government’s efforts so far to clean the Yamuna river have not borne much success, adding that the river can be made cleaner only when the sewer effluents discharged into it are treated and cleaned.

He said though some Chhath Ghats are being constructed along the Yamuna, the river is not fit for even washing hands.

The Congress leader added that the devotees will put their health to risk if they take a dip in the dirty waters during the puja.

On CM’s claims regarding decrease in ammonia levels of the river, he said that it will be like a deception for those who would be conducting Puja in the Yamuna’s toxic waters.

Yadav has said efforts are being made to clean Yamuna water by using a chemical to remove the toxic froth, while the CM is trying to demonstrate that the water’s level of ammonia and oxygen are in safe zone.

He added that treated sewage before discharge into the Yamuna is only 35 per cent of the total estimated sewage discharge.
