Gupta reiterated that the Delhi government has always prioritised medical and nursing services, and this step represents a significant, concrete commitment in that direction.
The decision applies to all three government nursing colleges in the national capital, CM said.
She explained that the decision was taken during a Cabinet meeting held at the Delhi secretariat on Tuesday, attended by all the ministers.
As per CM, the monthly stipend for nursing interns has now been increased from Rs 500 to Rs 13,150, and the hike will take effect immediately and apply to all eligible nursing interns for the duration of their internship.
She said that the dedication and service of nursing professionals will now be formally recognised in line with standards set by the central government.
Gupta noted that this long-awaited decision ensures that the interns are not only financially empowered during their training but also feel that their hard work and service are duly acknowledged by the government.
She emphasised that nursing staff form the backbone of the healthcare system, whether it is caring for patients in hospitals, providing emergency services under challenging conditions, or assisting vulnerable sections of society in health camps, nurses consistently perform their duties with complete dedication.
Gupta stressed that without them, the healthcare system would be incomplete.
Delhi’s Health Minister, Dr Pankaj Kumar Singh, described the increase as both significant and commendable, adding that the decision represents not merely financial support, but also reflects the government’s philosophy of prioritising the welfare of healthcare personnel.
He said that the government believes that providing better working conditions and benefits to nursing and medical professionals enables them to serve citizens more effectively.
He pointed, alleging that the previous administrations had not taken such a step, but now, under the guidance of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and CM Gupta’s leadership, the government has courageously addressed this disparity.
Singh added that nursing interns, during their six-month internship, bridge the gap between academic education and practical healthcare services through hard work.
