Delhi BJP spokesperson Praveen Shankar Kapoor has urged Chief Minister Rekha Gupta and MP Praveen Khandelwal to organize the Chandni Chowk Festival this December to promote the Ganga-Jamuni tehzeeb (composite culture) and religious heritage, as well as the commercial vibrancy of Old Delhi.

Kapoor, who is also the general secretary of the Chandni Chowk Nagarik Manch (a forum of the locals in the area), in a letter to the chief minister mentioned that the historic area is long known for its places of worship belonging to different religions, the iconic wholesale markets, and culinary delights.

He added that the area is also very popular for its literary legacy, starting from the poetry of Mirza Ghalib to the verses of Surendra Sharma.

Additionally, the area holds a prominent place in India’s freedom struggle due to the active participation of its residents in the movement.

Kapoor, therefore, urged the CM to host a week-long festival, during which the government should allow Chandni Chowk shops to remain open until midnight.

He also suggested that arrangements be made on the main road to serve delicacies from not only Old Delhi, but also from across the country, along with performances of regional music, songs, and qawwalis.
