The Delhi Police are investigating the death of a 28-year-old man who was found on the backseat of a locked car belonging to a railway engineer at the Anand Vihar railway station yard last week.

According to the police, initial findings indicate that the deceased, Javed, may have died of asphyxiation after being accidentally trapped inside the vehicle.

“On Friday, at around 7:30 pm, they received a railway memo at the Anand Vihar Railway Station police station reporting a body found inside a car,” KPS Malhotra, Deputy Commissioner of Police Railways, said.

Adding to his statement further, he said, “A railway police team immediately reached the spot, and the East District Crime Team along with forensic experts were called in for inspection.”

After reaching the spot, cops found that the said car was locked and the interior door levers were broken.

Javed, who was from Bakra village in Bihar’s Purnia district, was found lying on the back seat. His clothes, a bag, and a mobile phone were discovered nearby. No external injury marks were found on his body.

“During inquiry, the car’s owner, a senior section engineer (Electrical) posted at Anand Vihar Railway Station, was present at the scene. CCTV footage revealed that on October 31, at 10:49 am, SSE Guru Pratap parked his car and went to his nearby office, apparently without locking it,” DCP Malhotra said.

At 11:22 am, Javed, who, according to the police, worked as a construction labourer and was in Delhi to catch a train to Bihar, was seen approaching the car with his backpack. He opened the boot, inspected it, then entered through the front seat and moved to the back seat.

“At 1:50 pm, SSE Guru Pratap sent an office staff member to retrieve his lunchbox bag from the car, which was on the front seat. The staffer opened the door, took the bag, and then locked the car using the central locking system before leaving. Between 1:54 pm and 3:13 pm, Javed, who was still inside the vehicle, was seen anxiously trying to open the doors. After that, no further movement was recorded,” the DCP said.

At around 5:34 pm, when Guru Pratap unlocked his car to leave for home, he found Javed lying unresponsive on the back seat. He alerted nearby railway staff, who subsequently informed the police, the DCP said, adding that Javed’s identity was confirmed through his Aadhaar card and mobile phone.

The body was sent for autopsy at GTB Hospital on Sunday, after Javed’s family arrived from Bihar, the officer mentioned in his statement.

Police said the post-mortem surgeon verbally indicated that the death appeared to be due to asphyxiation, and the viscera, along with other samples, have been preserved for forensic analysis.

Police stated that proceedings are being initiated under Section 194(1) of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), and further investigation into this case is ongoing by the team.
