Odisha pediatrician takes ‘Indian Idol’ by storm

A young pediatrician doing internship in the Institute of Medical Sciences and SUM Hospital here has caused waves in the popular TV reality show ‘Indian Idol Season 14’ with his singing.

Dr Rohan Biswal, who often sings while treating children to make them feel at ease, won the appreciation of the judges Kumar Shanu, Vishal Dadlani and Shreya Ghoshal when he sang ‘Kaisa Hua’, a popular number from the film ‘Kabir Singh’ earning the golden ticket.

Surprised to know that he was a doctor, the judges dubbed him as ‘Doctor Singer’ even as Biswal introduced a group of children under treatment in his hospital through a video call. Responding to the request of the children, Kumar Sanu sang ‘Humko Sirf Tumse Pyar Hai’ for them.

Dr Biswal, who passed out from IMS and SUM Hospital, said that sometimes he sang for his patients as children felt uncomfortable in the hospital and were afraid of needles.

“My singing often helped in making the children comfortable and ease their pain,” he said.

Beginning his singing career from the age of four, Dr Biswal was trained in Hindustani classical singing and had recorded some bhajans.

Encouraged by his parents, his guru Debendra Narayan Satpathy and his teachers, he is adept at singing classical, semi-classical and modern songs.

He also has his official YouTube channel and is linked to the ‘Arpan Band’. He had finished within the top 20 in the Indian Idol Junior Season-2 in 2015.
