Ahead of the World Rabies Day, it has been decided that comprehensive measures, including microchipping of street dogs, prevention of dog bite incidents, and digitization of the vaccination process, will be undertaken in Delhi to curb the disease.

The decision has been taken at a meeting of the Delhi Animal Welfare Board held on Wednesday at the Delhi Secretariat, chaired by Development Minister Kapil Mishra. Development Commissioner Shurbir Singh, along with senior officials from the Animal Husbandry Department, NDMC, MCD, and other concerned agencies were present on the occasion.

Aimed at deliberating on various aspects of animal welfare, the meeting laid special emphasis on “strengthening rabies control and dog population management in Delhi through micro-chipping.”

During the meeting, Mishra ordered a dog census and monitoring system to ensure accurate data and stronger future planning.

A decision was taken to make the the registration of pet shops mandatory. For this, a special monitoring committee will be constituted.

The minister said all related rules will be implemented soon and every regional committee will be activated to ensure monitoring and action at the local level.

Another important agenda of the meeting related to administrative and financial matters and a proposal was to transfer funds from the Delhi Advisory Board for Animal Welfare to the Delhi Animal Welfare Board. It was also agreed to set up a standing committee and other sub-committees, recruit new staff, and approve expenditure for the smooth functioning of the Board’s initiatives.

It has been decided to promote animal welfare and launch awareness programmes at the school level in collaboration with the Education Department. Additionally, board members will be allowed to participate in national and international conferences and training programmes.

It was also resolved that an Animal Market Monitoring Committee will soon be formed in Delhi to oversee activities in animal markets.

During the meeting, Mishra alleged that the Animal Welfare Board did not meet for several years under the previous governments. Wednesday’s addressed all pending issues of the Board and all the problems related to animals in Delhi.
