Alleging foul play in the death of a 27-year-old woman from Himachal Pradesh, married in Chandigarh, the family members have demanded justice.

The family members of deceased Nitika Sharma, whose body was recovered from Bhakhra canal, two weeks after she went missing from Chandigarh on 18 February, have demanded an inquiry into her death.

Nitika Sharma, who hailed from Kangra was married to Hemant Sharma, a resident of Sector 45, Chandigarh in 2012.

The father of the deceased Surinder Kumar charged her in-laws for dowry death.

“Her husband used to torture her demanding money after the marriage. Many a times we had to go to Chandigarh to settle the issues between Nitika and her husband,” he alleged.

After Nikita had gone missing the family had also announced a reward of Rs One Lakh to the person providing any information about their daughter’s whereabouts.

During investigations, two weeks after the woman went missing, the police recovered her body from Bhakhra canal from Smana village, Patiala.

The family alleged that she was murdered by her husband and her in-laws.
“We spent 8 to 9 days outside the police station in Chandigarh when Nitika went missing. They filed an FIR only after receiving the body of my daughter,” said Surinder Kumar.

The family members charging the Chandigarh Police of not conducting a fair probe into the death of their daughter, approached the Kangra Superintendent of Police, Santosh Patial for help and demanded detailed investigation into the death of their daughter.

“We have lost faith in the Chandigarh police and fear that they are not investigating the case properly,” alleged the father of the deceased.

Nitika is survived by a four-and-a-half-year-old daughter, who is in the custody of her grandparents.

“We are worried about the child. We are also not aware where are the in-laws of Nikita,” grieved one of her relative. Meanwhile, Superintendent Kangra assured the family of the deceased Nitika Sharma for a fair probe in the matter.

“We will write to the Chandigarh police administration for proper probe in the matter and also to inform the family from time to time regarding the progress in the investigation,” said Santosh Patial.
