Action taken in 258 false cases, says Justice Gill

Of the 344 complaints allowed so far by the Justice (retired) Mehtab Singh Gill Commission, investigating the false cases registered under the previous regime, action has so far been taken in 258 instances.

This was disclosed here by Justice Gill, who submitted his 9th interim report to Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh on Thursday.

Giving details of the action taken, Gill said first information reports (FIRs) had been filed in the courts in 148 cases, while compliance of orders had been reported in 38.

In another 33 cases, proceedings had been initiated under Section 182 IPC, and action had been taken against erring police officials in 10 cases. Compensation had so far been awarded in 29 cases, he told the CM, citing feedback received from the Nodal Officers.

Expressing satisfaction at the implementation of the Commission’s recommendations, Gill said justice was finally being delivered to the victims of the false cases, with the CM issuing strict directives to the police and other concerned departments to move expeditiously to take action as suggested by the Commission.

An official spokesperson said of the total 4,351 complaints received, as on August 1, 2018, the Commission has disposed of 1,539 complaints, of which 1,195 have been dismissed.

Bathinda district had reported 47 cases of action taken by police for cancellation of FIRs, followed by 17 from Moga district, 13 from Ludhiana, 12 from Tarn Taran and 11 each from Amritsar and Ferozepur, according to data received from the various districts. Ludhiana had maximum number of four cases of action taken against errant police officials.

The 9th interim report dealt with 240 cases, of which seven were allowed by the Commission.
