AAP councilors protest against cancellation of mayoral polls
The party may move the court after taking legal opinion on the matter, said AAP leader Durgesh Pathak.
The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) on Friday threatened to launch a protest campaign if Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) goes ahead with fare hike from next month.
Delhi AAP convener Gopal Rai, addressing a press conference, said even though the state government has opposed the metro fare hike, but some media reports suggest that the DMRC might go ahead with its decision.
In that case, Rai said, the AAP will have no choice but to launch a protest campaign against the DMRC to roll back its idea of fare hike.
The Arvind Kejriwal-led Delhi government on Thursday had directed the DMRC to put the proposed fare hike on hold till the rationale behind the proposal is explained and all relevant documents are shown to the government.
Metro rides are set to increase by a minimum of Rs 10 from October. This is the second time in the year that the fares are scheduled to increase. The last increase was in May when the minimum fare went up from Rs 8 to Rs 10 and the maximum from Rs 30 to Rs 50.
Rai, who also holds a cabinet post in Delhi government, said the increase in fare will compel the commuters to give up Metro service and start using private vehicles, which will further deteriorate the pollution levels in the city.
Rai said that if implemented, this would be the second fare hike in a year and added that Metro ridership had decreased since the fare hike in May.
