In a major catch, the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) here on Thursday seized about 36 kgs of Hashish (charas) that was being carried to Nashik in Maharashtra.

The zonal director of NCB, Manoj Kumar, said that two persons belonging to Anantnag district in South Kashmir carrying the contraband in a Honda car have been arrested. The vehicle has also been impounded.

The  charas valuing few crores of rupees was seized near Kaluchak  on the Jammu-Delhi highway. The NCB acting on the basis of secret information intercepted the car that was coming from Srinagar and seized 36 packets of the high value contraband from the specially fabricated cavities in the rear seat and boot of the car, Manoj Kumar said.

The two arrested persons were being interrogated by the NCB to know about their contacts in Nashik and other places.

It is worth mentioning that Kashmir has overtaken Himachal Pradesh in smuggling narcotics to Maharashtra that has emerged as the highest consumer of Hashish.

Despite a ban on cultivation of poppy that produces Hashish, it is being grown in many parts of South Kashmir where terrorists have created their bases. The contraband is also being smuggled from Pakistan.
