WPI inflation for August recorded at 0.52% amid increase in food products prices

The annual rate of inflation based on Wholesale Price Index (WPI) for August is registered at 0.52 percent on a year-on-year basis.

The annual rate of inflation based on Wholesale Price Index (WPI) for August is registered at 0.52 percent on a year-on-year basis.

According to the data released by the Ministry of Commerce, the positive rate of inflation is primarily due to increase in prices of food products, other manufacturing, non-food articles, other non-metallic mineral products and other transport equipment etc.

On a month over month basis, the change in WPI stood at 0.52% in August as compared to July.

The rate of inflation based on WPI Food Index remains positive from (-) 2.15% in July, 2025 to 0.21% in August, 2025. Further, the price of non-food articles (2.92%), minerals (2.66%) and food articles (1.45%) increased in August as compared to July while the price of Crude Petroleum & Natural Gas (-0.43%) decreased.

The index for fuel and power decreased by 0.69 pc. The price of electricity (-2.91 pc) and mineral oils (-0.07 pc) also decreased in August as compared to July.

However, the Price of coal has remained the same as in the previous month.

Recently, the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI) also released the data for retail inflation saying in August, it rose to 2.07 percent from earlier 1.61 percent in July.

The food inflation for August stood at -0.69 percent, rising 107 basis points compared to July. Corresponding inflation rates for rural and urban areas are -0.70 pc and -0.58 pc, respectively.

Food inflation in rural areas was at -1.74 percent in August. It increased for urban areas from -1.90 percent during the same period last month.
