WPI based inflation for September cools down to 0.13%

The Wholesale Price Index (WPI) based inflation for September was recorded at 0.13%, driven by increase in prices of manufacture of food products, other manufacturing, non-food articles, other transport equipment and textiles etc.

As per the data released by the Ministry of Commerce & Industry, the month over month change in WPI for the month of September stood at (-) 0.19% as compared to August. In August, the WPI inflation was registered at 0.52%.

The prices of food articles and non-food articles dropped by 1.38% and 1.06%, respectively, while minerals and crude petroleum and natural gas recorded increases of 1.36% and 0.64%.

As per the ministry data, the index for fuel and power group decreased by 0.14% from 143.6 for August to 143.4 in September. Further, the price of mineral oils (-0.54%) and coal (-0.15%) decreased in September as compared to August. The price of electricity (1.20%) increased in September as compared to August.

The Consumer Price Index (CPI) based inflation for September has been recorded at 1.54%, registering its lowest after June, 2017. In comparison to August, there is a decrease of 53 basis points in headline inflation.

Earlier in the month, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) in its Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) meeting, while taking into account the retail inflation, had kept benchmark policy rates unchanged at 5.5%.
