Sugarcane crushing season commences in UP with 21 sugar mills starting operations today

The sugarcane crushing season of 2025-26 commenced in Uttar Pradesh on Tuesday. Instructions have been issued to sugar mills to promptly pay the sugarcane price due for the current crushing season, 2025-26, as per the regulations.

According to State Sugarcane Development Minister Laxmi Narain Choudhary, crushing work has started in 21 sugar mills of the state, which include one from the cooperative sector and 20 from the private sector.

Choudhary said that the state’s 53 sugar mills have already issued indents for sugarcane purchases. He further informed that among the sugar mills operating in the state, 5 out of 19 sugar mills of the Saharanpur region, 8 out of 16 of the Meerut region, 2 out of 23 of the Moradabad region, and 6 out of 19 sugar mills of the Lucknow region have started the crushing work.

Apart from this, the other 32 sugar mills of the state have completed all the formalities for starting their crushing work and have issued indents for sugarcane purchase. Operation of these sugar mills will also start in the next few days. The remaining 69 sugar mills will also start functioning soon, the minister added.

Accordingly, sugar mills have begun paying the sugarcane price due for the current crushing season. Timely operation of sugar mills will facilitate farmers by clearing fields for wheat sowing, the minister said.

Uttar Pradesh is the largest producer of sugarcane in India, with cultivation across about 70 lakh acres. The state also leads in sugar production and has the largest number of private sugar mills.

The government recently raised the SAP for the 2025-26 season by Rs 30 per quintal, setting prices at Rs 400 for early varieties and Rs 390 for general varieties.
